Caregiver Resources - Respite Care

Respite care gives a caregiver a temporary break from the duties of caring for an older or disabled loved one. It encompasses a wide range of services, including home-based non-medical assistance, companionship services, and community-based adult day care.

A respite care provider may provide companion-ship and/or help with meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, bathing, dressing, shopping, running errands, transportation, and administering medication. A respite care provider may stay for a few hours or a few days. Other respite care services offer facilities where an elder can stay while a caregiver is away or needs a longer break.

Respite care is not home healthcare. However, some respite care providers also provide healthcare. When selecting a respite care provider, confirm that all necessary medical and non-medical services are included.

You can locate a respite care provider by contacting the Oklahoma Respite Resource Network (ORRN)’s Respite Provider Registry at (888) 771-4550 or (405) 271-4550 or your Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-211-2116 (or 211).
