Caregiver Resources - Adult Day Care

Adult day care centers are community-based sites where adults can enjoy socializing, physical activities, and mentally stimulating programs.

Most adult day care centers operate during normal weekday business hours, but some are open evenings and weekends. Day centers do not provide 24-hour care. Transportation to and from the center may be offered. Most serve nutritional snacks and meals.

Adult day care centers are not medical facilities, but some do set up and monitor medication administration or reminder schedules. If needed, some centers provide assistance with personal care, such as feeding, bathing, and dressing. Some adult day care centers have nurses and physical therapists on staff.

When looking for a an adult day care center, ask what services are provided, as these vary greatly from center to center. Be sure to also ask if there is a fee to use the center.

You can locate a respite care provider by contacting the Oklahoma Respite Resource Network (ORRN)’s Respite Provider Registry at (888) 771-4550 or (405) 271-4550 or your Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-211-2116 (or 211).

Some adult day care centers have contracts with the Department of Human Services/Aging Services Division.  DHS/ASD’s Adult Day Services provides services to persons 60 or older and adults with developmental or other types of disabilities through an individualized plan of care. The program enables family members and other caregivers to continue caring for elders at home, rather than requiring them to go into nursing homes.
